Don Brooks, who has been a supporter of Bands Against Breast Cancer from its inception, was diagnosed with a rare cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, in Oct of 2010.
He fought his cancer and Don has exceeded all expectations. (His doctors didn’t even think he’d make it to Christmas 2010.)
Don’s cancer has now spread to his spine (it was already in his pelvic bone at diagnosis) & to most other bones. Don’s cancer has weakened the integrity of his skeleton and its ability to support his body weight; he now needs a wheelchair. He’d appreciate having a bit of independence and would love a chair he can manage, collapse & lift himself. Medicaid will only pay for a big, bulky one (like they have at hospitals) that he is unable to lift. Unfortunately, just like many “fat free” products, less costs more. Crazy!
Don has been a real supporter of BABC. Any help to buy Don this wheelchair to help him stay mobile will be appreciated. The wheelchair will cost about $1200. Anything extra will help with Don’s meds. Don does get SSI but his Medicaid deductible exceeds that by about $200/mo & many of his needed meds aren’t covered. His family is about tapped out.
While BABC makes an effort to not single out one particular person in the fight against cancer, and especially one not related to breast cancer, Don’s spirit and tenacity in his fight against this horrible disease is inspiring to us all.
APRIL 2012 UPDATE: Thanks to all who donated to raise funds for a wheelchair for the ever-positive and inspirational Bands Against Breast Cancer volunteer, the late, Indestructible Don Brooks, Jr. All donations received went to pay for his wheelchair.
